Final Notice by Van Fleisher.
(What would you do if you knew – for certain – that you had one week to live?)
Motivation is a strong theme in this story: The NRA sees seniors as a great untapped market for selling guns. It promotes sales with a 20 percent discount to seniors ignoring the fact that the highest rates of gun ownership and dementia belong to seniors over 65 years of age; the dangerous world that we live in is threatening to weaker members of society and seniors, in particular, are likely to be bullied and may hold grudges; Vijay Patel, an inventor of an advanced new product that tells you when you are going to die, is alpha testing the product with a group of seniors. Vijay focuses on the good this product can do but finds there another side to the story.
In this fast-paced, well-researched novel, the author weaves together profit motives, feelings of irrelevance, together with the “death sentence” and produces a thought-provoking narrative. He examines the politics of the gun lobby and gun ownership through the eyes of senior citizens. Vince and Trudi Fuller chat together at breakfast or driving in the car or over a meal with friends while forming their opinions. Their dog Miles gets savaged by a pit bull owned by two bullies making this one threat too many for the couple and they decide to buy a gun. While this is happening, Vijay Patel is receiving marketing feedback that when some seniors know that they are going to die, they react by shooting people with whom they have a grudge. Vijay must weigh this information against the need to bring the company to market with an IPO.
I liked this stimulating book because it is topical and touches on issues of the day. What I liked the most is the dialogue between Vince and Trudi Fuller, and the love they had for their dog Miles. They talked about many serious subjects with humor. I related to all the characters in the book which suggests that they are true to life.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was hard to put down. The business issues were reminiscent of corporate life, perhaps a little nicer than most. I do not rate it 3 stars because the storyline was well-developed revealing the plot page by page. There are interesting statistics supporting the points of discussion.
I found nothing to dislike in the novel, but it is not formatted well for the iPod.
This book would appeal to swing voters and the political base. I do not think it would appeal to the far left or the far right. The tenor of the book is much too reasonable.
