Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an engaging novel with a deep story, one that undertakes many journeys, including that of the inner journey one takes through life, learning about who we are and where we choose to belong.
The tale starts out with an ill-tempered young girl named Sarah, who has had quite a rough start in life and is shipped off to another part of the world where she eventually finds herself at her long-lost grandfather's house, which comes as a great surprise since neither of the two knew the other existed. The grandfather, Tom, is about to embark on a long hike with his close friends, William and Myra, just when Sarah shows up and life is thrown a curve-ball. They finally make the decision to bring Sarah along on this trekking journey through the Olympic Peninsula, and so that Tom may revisit his grandfather's grave. Sarah is initially put off by the idea of hiking in the wilderness, but she joins them all the same and together they embark on an amazing journey with beautiful scenery, mysterious animals and old legends about the people who once roamed these ancient lands. Through the story as they all get to know Sarah and each other better, the bonds begin to grow and the stories shared become of great value to everyone.
I found this book to be exciting and extremely interesting. I love the story line of finding a long-lost relative, and the journey of a young girl who hasn't had it easy, where no one before really wanted to deal with her until she stumbles upon the right people who take her in and actually begin to care for her. All the while, she ends up being the one who shows the adults that younger kids have a lot more to offer than what we give them credit for. I also found that the topics of the ancient lands and the discussion about how long we have been here on this earth to be very intriguing. To be able to read about it in a story, and to see how the characters evolve over time throughout the story was wonderful. It is a compelling read, with entertaining information while allowing the mind to ponder these "what if" questions about our origins as a human species.
It was a little hard for me to get into at the beginning, but once the story took off I found I didn't want to put the book down. The editing was done very well and the book reads easy, flowing nicely with a short sentence structure, keeping it to the point but surely not lacking in any description.
Overall, this story is creative, enticing, and a really good read. I happily rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, and I recommend it to anyone who is looking to dive into a journey about "a land of magic, history, and legend."
