I found it difficult to rate The Bourne Identity, the first in Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne series. It is certainly far superior to the Matt Damon movies the series has spawned.

Looking back at it objectively, the plot is completely farcical, the dialogue is frequently contrived and unnatural, and the characters are simply not authentic or believable. The events described in this escapist action thriller are simply fanciful, and most of the characters are fantastic inventions.

And yet, the narrative had me gripped throughout, flicking through the pages on my kindle as fast as I could.

Ludlum achieves a reasonable degree of credibility through his intricate plotting and the fine detail he includes. He tries really hard to ensure there are no gaping plot holes. The quality of the writing is actually pretty good, and he has the ability to make the reader care about his characters and how events will turn out.

I am giving this novel a pass mark overall - I'm sitting right on the border between 3 and 4 stars. Let's call it 3.5.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
It was magnificent. A world of weird, interesting and amazing things. Dahl is really the best!

MY FRIEND, Marilyn by Christopher Lentz. I was disappointed that he did not focus on Marilyn as the title would have you think. But I gave it a 3 out of 4 stars .

The Last book I read was a non-fiction book called Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman and I'd give it a solid 5/5, one of mu favourite books so far, short chapters, funny, entertaining, insightful and just a really good read in general.

The last book I read for OBC was "Chauvinist's guide to Romance" by Morris Rollins, and gave it 2 stars because, despite the funny title, the book had too many flaws like run-on sentences all over.

Oh, and as for myself, I read "Beauty and the Professor" by Skye Warren, and, although I love her writing, I could not finish the book, it simply got too boring (that never happened with any of her other books).

"Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven": I'd give it 2/4 stars. The plot was relatively interesting but not very original. Overall, it read like a movie instead of a book.

Yesterday I finished Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator and gave it a complete 5-star (goodreads) and 4-star (0nlinebookclub) rating. It was amazing. Personally, I think everything that Dahl had written is amazing.

Nightmare Abbey by Thomas Love Peacock is (I think) supposed to be a satirical work lampooning the philosophical ramblings and bizarre behaviours of upper class Englishmen.

But I found it pretentious and tedious (even the online dictionary couldn't cope with the many obscure words used) and, although mercifully short, I simply didn't enjoy it at all.

2 stars out of 5

Prince of Flames (The Dragori, #0) by Ben Alderson

A novella from the series. I gave it 2 stars. It was well-written but not intriguing enough. Or necessary.

I just finished Bluewater Walkabout: Into Africa. I have found this book so inspirational. She has you in a trance where you feel as though you are standing right there next to her. You are feeling and seeing everything as if you were really there in person.
