Re: What is the last book you read, and your rating?
Looking back at it objectively, the plot is completely farcical, the dialogue is frequently contrived and unnatural, and the characters are simply not authentic or believable. The events described in this escapist action thriller are simply fanciful, and most of the characters are fantastic inventions.
And yet, the narrative had me gripped throughout, flicking through the pages on my kindle as fast as I could.
Ludlum achieves a reasonable degree of credibility through his intricate plotting and the fine detail he includes. He tries really hard to ensure there are no gaping plot holes. The quality of the writing is actually pretty good, and he has the ability to make the reader care about his characters and how events will turn out.
I am giving this novel a pass mark overall - I'm sitting right on the border between 3 and 4 stars. Let's call it 3.5.

It was magnificent. A world of weird, interesting and amazing things. Dahl is really the best!

But I found it pretentious and tedious (even the online dictionary couldn't cope with the many obscure words used) and, although mercifully short, I simply didn't enjoy it at all.

A novella from the series. I gave it 2 stars. It was well-written but not intriguing enough. Or necessary.
