Have you ever wondered if everything in life happens according to fate? Or do we choose our destiny? These questions have long pondered philosophers. It is then interesting that Dr A.Reza Kamarei, a scientist and food consultant, discusses these questions that were puzzling to him, drawing on different disciplines, and looking at our lives. He takes us on a journey researching the subject, from the perspective of science and genetics, and the situation in the womb before we were born. He then covers more social influences such as our family situation, our nationality, religion, economic situation, our ideas, as well as other influences upon us such as arts, media, education, and social status. Even discrimination and prejudice can influence our destiny. From this, he attempts to show how much of our life is determined for us, and how much choice we have, against the predetermined factors. He splits fate into deterministic factors, and the semi-optional and optional. Puzzle of Fate takes us through his research and conclusions to the question of is fate determined? And how can we change it? It is 256 pages long and is written in the first person, directly addressing and advising the reader, and at other times, in the third person, objectively discussing research.

The book was well-edited, and I only came across two grammatical errors in the book. This did not affect the meaning, and the book was written well. It was also adequately researched, and the author showed nicely all the different factors that may influence us in our lives, even things that we may have not considered. I never really thought that art would have much of an influence on our destiny, and never considered discrimination. Yet, he discusses these issues, and chance incidents, and so forth. The writer also does not stop there but advises the reader to consider the factors in his or her own life that shaped him or her and record these to see how the writer came to his conclusion. Perhaps the most important part is not what we can't change but what we can. If we have choices, how we can make the most of them, and how should we choose to live in the best way? I, therefore, found the book very enlightening, well-researched, and well-thought-out, for such a deep subject. His conclusions also seemed the logical follow on from his earlier arguments.

On the more negative side, I did not agree with all the ideas or viewpoints of the writer. Although the concept of fate is not something restricted to religious ideas, I felt that he took more of a secular or even atheistic stance and interpretation of many events. It is interesting since I have not come across a book discussing fate from a pure secularist perspective, yet; it lacked spirituality and perhaps because of my inclination to spirituality and being religious; I disagreed with some of his interpretations and foundations, which I believe are not correct.

I rated the book 4 out of 4 stars because the book was an enlightening discussion of the subject, well-written, and thoroughly covered the issue so, I felt it was a beneficial read. The negative issues did not make the book less valuable, or prevent other readers from enjoying the book, and were more personal.

It would most likely suit people who enjoy non-fiction, who have questions relating to fate or destiny, and who are interested in philosophy, theology or science.

For those looking for a purely spiritual or religious explanation of fate, it may not be the book you are looking for, although the general explanation from a worldly perspective may benefit all readers.
