We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in his series. The story starts to pick up the pace in this particular book. It marks the start of exploring Voulhire as it includes places, people, and other variables that are essential in the development of Voulhire into a great nation.

Virko is the prosperous industrial town of Voulhire. Galen and his companions were drawn into this bustling town when the iron supply that was supposed to be delivered from Alcovia to Magnum Caelum was abruptly cut off. They had no choice other than to try their luck in acquiring the needed supply in Virko. Meanwhile, a muted current of change is surging stealthily into the heart of the holy city. On the other side, Galen and his companions seemed to have stumbled upon a dark secret in Virko that can be a catalyst in bringing unexpected changes to the nation.

The plot proceeded in a vigorous pace that flowed swiftly, approaching a waterfall. It is noticeable in the last part of the book that there are plenty of surprises lying in wait. It is not the end of the story, as it has just begun. The author’s style of writing the suspense in this book sprouted many ideas of how the plot will continue in the next book. There are also questions of what’s and why’s at the end of the book. Although the book ended up in such a suspenseful way, there is not a shred of dissatisfaction felt after reading the book.

The nature of the characters in the book adds flavor to the story. There is the playful type, the serious one, the indifferent front, the childish type, the naive type, and many more. Also, the dark, morose, and twisted mind type is ever-present as I have noticed that the author’s other works have this type of character. On another note, all the characters in this book are developed beautifully and meticulously. It adds a layer of depth to make the story more captivating and immersive.

Power struggle, mystery, political intrigue, mind games, friendship, loyalty, and betrayal are among the multitude of themes in the story. I give this book a deserved rating of 4 out of 4 stars as I am enamored with the book. Meanwhile, I recommend this book to those who are fond of reading sci-fi/fantasy books and series books. However, a word of reminder to those who have no strong will; brace yourself if you decide to dive into this book as this contains vivid descriptions of gory scenes. In short, this is suitable only to mature readers.
