We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is a fictional novel set mainly in a town known as Virko. It is the second installment in the We are Voulhire book series. As he lay on his deathbed, Lord Venden Hrelek’s dying wish is to end noble sovereignty in Virko, a wish that almost all noble families including his son, Hans Hrelek, are against because this meant that Virko would no longer be ruled by lords but by elected captains. Determined to make his wish come true, Lord Venden sends a hawk to the king so that he may approve of the change.

Hans Hrelek, having taken the leader of demons into bondage, plans to use him to ensure he inherits the lordship over Virko. Hans forms an alliance with a few of the noble families to help him with his plans. Meanwhile, Galen and his friends, Demetrius and Rowan, are sent to Virko by the mayor of Magnum Caelum in search of some iron. When Demetrius discovers the demon, he as well as Galen and Rowan go to fight the demon in hopes of destroying it. Demetrius is tricked into destroying the ‘Hollenblase’, which binds the demon but little does he know what he is about to unleash.

The author does an amazing job of showing us the perspective of different characters. Chapters that are in Galen’s perspective are written in the first-person point of view while other chapters are in the third-person perspective. I love how the characters are developed, each with his own personality and ambitions. I liked the unique friendship formed between Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius. The three friends face challenges together and help each other in time of need. I love how the author skillfully developed the plot as well as his realistic portrayal of Voulhire, making it easy for the reader to visualize.

I found nothing that I did not like. As great as the book is, it is not without shortcomings. There are a few grammatical errors including the omission of some words. Those who are offended by the use of profane words may want to steer clear of the book.

This book is a captivating one thus I rated it 4 out of 4 stars. The story offered is an enjoyable one. I would recommend this book to other readers. This is a book that will leave the reader longing for more.
