Brian O'hare has not failed to prove his dexterity in writing captivating and interesting mystery-filled novels. This is once again proved in the second volume of Inspector Sheehan mysteries titled 'The 11.05 Murders'.It is glad to know that this book can be read without having to have a prior knowledge of the first volume of this mysteries.Mysteries in this novel would make the reader eager to know why three men would be murdered in the same particular way and at the same time, why there would be an unknown informant disclosing useful information to a detective and the likes while reading the novel. The novel is filled with themes of mystery, suspense, revenge and even love which makes the book more interesting to read.
The 11.05 murders is a fictional story with its settings based in Northern Ireland.Three citizens had been killed and it is up to Inspector Sheehan and his team to find out who committed the crime.Investigation began and it was found that these killings are related to a crime which the victims had committed twelve years ago.The antagonist in the novel is Detective Denise Stewart who had just been promoted to a new police station. Her ability to think, courageous spirit, daunting mind promoted her respect among the other detectives as she contributed largely to finding information which would help them to find the killer.Although she was inexperienced to detective work and was also trying to recover from the hurts of her past relationship, she was able to contribute largely due to the friendly, welcoming nature of her boss[Inspector Sheehan] and other colleagues unlike her former workstation.Despite the fact that the detectives were able to get lots of information, they found it difficult to fit all these information together as they were left to brainstorm and place a strategy to finding the killer. It took a strategic Inspector Sheehan who had to apply one of the popular Sherlock Holmes skills to detect the killer.
There was a lot of twists in the novel as it was difficult for me to predict the killer. The author did a good job of trying to play with the reader's mind especially when it comes to predicting the killer.I had a lot of mind changes as the author introduces suspects with different stories that could be related to the killings.Tension also gnawed on me as i read the last three chapters as which was close to revealing the killer. This was what kept me glued to the book as my eagerness to confirm the killer is increased which is what I would commend the author for.
Although the plot and procedures taken by the detectives were not far-fetched from most detective movies i have watched,i still find it very interesting that the book gave me the same effect and feeling i would have got if watching a movie.I also like the fact that the author gave a vivid description of all the characters, events and places in the novel. The funny and engaging conversations with the different reactions of a character were what I found remarkable.
On the contrary,I did not like the way the author ended the book. That is a nice and satisfying ending to a book but it is unlike most mystery novels which make the readers ponder about their ending and make them wish to anticipate for continuity of the story line.
Apart from the few typographical errors I found while reading the novel and a few difficulty with reading some lines due to poor sentence construction, I think the book is a great mystery novel and i would like to give the book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars.i would also advise readers who can not bear a little bit of domestic violence, horrible murder scenes, tension and frightening attempt to murder not to read the novel.Altogether, this is a lovely novel for readers who seek mystery and suspense in a novel.
