Solaris Seethes is a science fiction novel written by Janet McNulty, and is the first in a series of four books. The opening finds the main character Rynah very happy because she has just got engaged. This happiness is short lived, as with the first of several plot twists, the place she works is attacked, and the main protagonists is discovered to be her finance Klanor. This scenario causes a subtle undercurrent the carries through the whole book.
Klanor steals the crystals that controls the planets magnetic fields, and causes a major planetary catastrophe. Rynah is forced to flee and stumbles across Solaris, an old military vessel that her grandfather owned, and escapes the planet.
Solaris has a built in A.I. with attitude, who informs Rynah that her grandfather predicted this would happen, and charged her to help Rynah save the universe. Following ancient texts, they assemble an unlikely team of people to hunt down Klanor, and recover the crystal.
The story is well written, and is an easy read, flowing from one action scene to the next. The overall premise of the story is the standard good versus bad, with the inevitable double dealing within the bad guys camp. There are several unexpected plot twists to keep the reader guessing what happens next. The characters all have unique personalities and backgrounds, which are well developed and the interactions between the characters are readily believable.
Even though I really enjoyed reading this book, there are a few things that caused me some dissatisfaction. Though it is a science fiction book, and you expect there to be technologies beyond our current understanding, in this book there are several scientific mistakes, which is a pet peeve of mine.
Janet has a way of describing everything in colors, so even though I have a great sense of the color scheme of people and places, what they actually look like is left to the readers imagination. Several times I found, later in the book, that some comment about a persons physical appearance was made that didn’t fit with how I had imagined them. This, for me, caused a little disorientation as I had to reconceive the whole persons look. Even in some of the action sequences details are left out, like a fight ending abruptly, leaving me wondering how!!!! What happened!
Finally, there a few instances where words are missing, and the sentence appears not to make sense, for these reasons I am going to give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I think this book would be appreciated by anyone who like a combination of sci-fi and action. Even though I really enjoyed the book, and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
