Review by Olua Daniel -- E&N Escape by P.N.Holland
What a magical blockbuster by P.N.Holland in the E&N Escape which was the third in The Vancouver Island Mysteries series. Although it will be great to read the previous series but this book was written in such a way that it stands alone, you don’t necessarily have to read the previous series for you to understand it.
E&N Escape is the story of Billy, Ricky, and Sarah who although they have magical powers, never had experience with the art of time traveling, until their research expedition on the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway where they were mesmerized when they realized that they had time traveled by accident. They found themselves in the middle of a war between the great wizard Mohryia and his allies and the rest of the galactic world, our young wizards were left in a Maze on whose side they should take. The story took many twists with our young wizards trying to right the wrong of the past, keep along with the present, and resolve the conflict in the future while fighting with other magical creatures, riding Dragons, fighting high-tech equipped soldiers, and genetic mutated Aliens.
I am a fan of mythical books, I spent a 30 hour straight without sleep on the Harry Potter series, and E&N Escape was no different. One thing exceptional about this book that I like most was the combination of magic and technology, it was not like just old Merlin typical story no. I also like the Intriguing historical records, example while in the future talking about the past, the book pinpoints years and follow-up events, like world war 3 starting 2040. I almost took records of the events and their year, thinking that they were prophetic and might really happen accordingly in the future.
The only thing that felt out of place for me in the book was its usage of two different points of view in the narrations. The book used the First-person point of view (1PV) in narrations where the Protagonist was present but uses a third-person point of view in his absence, which sometimes brings little confusion in the understanding of certain paragraphs especially where the transition took place. I think using only one Point of View throughout the book would have been great in maintaining good clarity, especially if the Third-person point of view was used instead.
This book is more of a general book, if you like Adventure, Magical creature, time travel, high tech, E&N Escape is full of them and you will like it.
I also think that many teenagers will love this book.
Because of its Great Plot, the combination of magic and modern technology, and its general structure, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars . I would have given it an excellent rating if not for the appearance of many typographical and grammatical errors the book contain, an example in chapter 1 Page 1 there was a grammatical error when it says “"I already told you,” I say, frowning at her while working my ipad, “Ricky and I are writing an historical essay on the E&N Railroad.””, and also chapter 23 Pg. 144 the Shardee’s Dragon name was changed from Rentwrath to Rentworth.
