Review by Rosetta_20 -- E&N Escape by P.N.Holland
The E&N Escape by P.N Holland is a thrilling action and fast pace book about two teenage wizards and a teenage psychic that time travel and get caught up in a war between the past, present and future. Billy, Ricky and Sarah must defeat the evil wizard Mohryia and fight alongside the Albion. Along the way, they fight with magic, witches, wizards and dragons. This all starts from E&N railroad.
I really liked how fast pace the book was. There was always some action every time Ricky, Billy and Sarah travelled to a different era. It made me feel as though I was apart of the adventure and P.N Holland, I believe, was especially successful in conveying the future world ‘New Albion’ almost in limbo: trying to build on their world however still facing their enemies. I also liked how at the beginning there was a lot of motifs which foreshadowed later events. For example, the author constantly referring to technology at the beginning to then discovering how important this was to the Albions in the future. I liked the details. Additionally, I admire the author’s descriptive writing especially when they describe new places, for example when Billy first discovers New Albion and even the description of the futuristic animals.
This leads to my negative point, which is that I wanted more description. There was a lot of dialogue which I believe did not always add anything to events or character development. I also did not like how there was a range of characters with no distinct personality. Even one of the main character’s, Billy, who I thought would bring humour yet also a serious nature to the book. There were a few moments where I got a glimpse of that such as his banter with his sister which later contrasted to him reflecting about who he is and where he belongs in time. However, this was not enough for me. It could have been pushed further. I think this is because there was a lack of dynamic in terms of pace. Although I did love that it was full of action there should have been more moments for characters to reflect. As a result, I feel like nothing really surprised me despite it being entertaining. There were no shocking events and as a book about adventure, I feel like that is significant. Even at the end, I felt as though it was rushed. There needs to be a variety in pace. I also did not like or understand why the author sometimes changed to first-person for Billy and third person for other characters especially when he was not always the main focus and again it did not make any difference for adding character and narrative development.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I gave it this because there was always action which kept me excited and I enjoyed the adventure with the three teenagers. I did not rate this a 3 out of 4 because of the reasons stated above but also because I feel as though there are mature themes in this book that the writer could have pushed further.
This book would be suitable for teenagers and young adults because there are some profanity and violence. This is for people who like adventure and dystopic fantasy.
