The Fox tells the story of the life of Leotychides, a boy born to one of the two royal families of Sparta. When he comes of age, Leo leaves home to join a flock where he is taught the ways of a Spartan. Although he does not know it, this type of common rearing is unsuitable for Sparta’s future king. In his flock, he makes friendships that will last a lifetime as he grows to personify the laws of Lykourgos that every Spartan is encouraged to aspire to. But Sparta is changing and, it becomes increasingly difficult to uphold these laws.

When his father dies, the young prince makes a decision that will alter the fate of the nation. To keep the vow he made to his father, he must keep Sparta united. However, Sparta is not just at war with its enemies, it's also fighting a battle with itself.

I would give this book a 3 out of 4. I did not think that I would enjoy the tales of war or military life, but the writer managed to keep these elements as interesting as the rest of the story. The book had a good main plot, that was supported by equally as strong but smaller storylines ensuring that the story did not go in a predictable direction. The story is narrated by the main character, who is likable but a little flat and distant. The supporting characters are well thought out and make up for what the main character lacks.

I would recommend this book for people who enjoy learning about history, especially those that find non-fiction books on the subject tedious. People who enjoy reading about war and battle strategies would also enjoy this book. The book is suitable for anyone older than 12 as it has no sexual descriptions and has only a few instances of profane language.

M. N. J. Butler weaves a tale about the glory and honor of battle, the intrigues of the royal court, as well as the passions of love, friendship, greed, and betrayal. The Fox is not just about the life of one man but tells the story of a nation at a crossroads that must choose whether to change forever or return to the values that made it great.
