Review of Awakening
Awakening by Tayma Tameen is a sci-fi/fiction novel about two sisters bound together by love. The two girls are inseparable. However, when one of them wakes up twenty-six years later, with all of her memories gone, all she can do is try to find her way back to how she was before and uncover the stories of her past.
Katja and her younger sister Amara, are royals, born and raised as princesses in the Kingdom of Hale. Amara is different, at birth her family recognizes that she has been blessed with the spirit of Brikkir, with the ability to control and manipulate ice and snow, later gaining her the name Lady Snow. As Amara grows throughout the book, through the chapters in the past, she learns more about her powers and how to control them, alongside the consequences when she does not treat her powers maturely. In chapters in the present time, Katja is lost in a small town, with nothing more than the memory of her name and some strange gold bracelets wrapped around her wrist. As Katja learns more about who she seems to be by the townspeople, it becomes more dangerous for her to stay around.
For the sake of her and the others, she leaves the town and sets off to make a life on her own, although as she stumbles her way through the woods she finds a cottage in the middle of nowhere owned by an old couple. She asks if she can stay for a while, willing to work for the hospitality they give to her. They reluctantly agree and give her a meal and a roof over her head, but the longer she stays the more like family they all become, and more secrets about her past come out.
The story was written in an engaging way with the wonders of what will happen next lingering on your mind seconds after you put the book down. With chapters from both the past and present, you get to know a lot about the girls and their history, hooking you on even more and bringing you deeper into the world of Awakening .
I love the way the book was written, and as I read on I fell into the book’s world and loved the characters as if they were my own family. I only found one grammatical error early on in the book and there were a few sentences that changed perspective but other than that the book was written beautifully.
There was nothing I did not enjoy about this book, as every chapter offered something new and exciting. There are no mentions of religion, sexual content, or swearing. There is one scene that contains fighting and gruesome detail, other than that it is clean from anything inappropriate.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars and recommend this book for anyone thirteen years or older.
