Review of My Special Day in Jasper,Texas USA
The setting for this book was Jasper, Texas, in the US. This short memoir details Martha Adams’ experiences as one of the first black students to enroll in a public school system during a period when racism was at its worst.
Martha was only eleven years old, yet she already possessed the instincts of an adult. As she walked into her class on her first day of school, she received quite a few glares and murmurs. The kind smile of her teacher, Mrs. Gannon, made her day more tolerable. Martha was a strong young girl, but could she endure attending a school where only white children were allowed? Join Martha as she talks about both her good and bad experiences.
This was the year 1968. It was a time when black and white people couldn’t sit together, eat together, or even go to the same school. It was a period of severe racism, especially in Jasper, Texas. This book was quite a refreshing read. The author used basic grammar to make this book easier for children to understand. It was much more entertaining to read because of the few pictures added.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. There were no grammar or punctuation errors, so I would say that this book was exceptionally well-edited. I rate My Special Day in Jasper, TX USA: In Memory of Martha by Jermaine Kenyatta 4 out of 4 stars.
This book teaches a lot of moral lessons and can serve as a bedtime story. It helps children understand that they are all equal irrespective of the color of their skin or where they come from. Though this was a short book, it was well-organized, and I had a great time reading it. I recommend this book to children, especially those who are finding it difficult to adjust to their school and environment.
