The most hilarious book I have ever read is 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir by Poppy Mortimer. I did not put down the book until I had completed it and I am secretly hoping the author goes on some more bad dates so she can write another book about it. This book was about a compilation of Ms Mortimer’s disastrous dates from age twenty to forty. The dates were either funny, disgusting, annoying, weird, or even abusive. She narrates each date by beginning with how she met the person and how she was asked out, then relating her encounter with them.

The author approaches each date with optimism and gives each guy the benefit of the doubt. Although her dates seem to have faults, which she unluckily faces at the beginning of all her dates, she always completes the date and does not belittle any of them. She constantly tries to leave each encounter she engages in with someone on an encouraging note. Although Poppy keeps meeting the wrong guy, she still keeps an open mind and considers another date. Will she eventually find Mr Right, or is she doomed to live a single life for the rest of her life? Read this book to find out.

My favourite part of this book was the humour. I found myself laughing out loud, and the other people who lived with me were watching me with concern. It did not matter to me because this book lifted my mood. I am confident that anyone reading it who is having a bad day or is stressed out will thoroughly enjoy it and their mood will improve.

Another feature of the book I liked was the life lessons the author left for the reader at the end of each chapter. Her hopeful outlook on life is something that I found extraordinary. I find it hard to believe someone could be so optimistic after so many bad dates. This is a quality people should emulate.

There was nothing negative I found about this book, and I found only minor errors while reading. It appears to be professionally edited. Therefore, I would rate 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir by Poppy Mortimer four out of four stars.

I would recommend this book to young adults (18 years and over). It will give them a sense of the weirdos they might have to meet when entering the dating world. They can also gain knowledge of what the bad signs are in a relationship and what to look out for. A reader can find those lessons learnt either at the end of each date narrated or in the full compilation listed at the end of the book, which I greatly appreciated. Readers who enjoy memoirs and are looking for a good laugh will enjoy this book.
