Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss is a non-fiction book by Susan Ducharme Hoben. The book is a memoir of Bruce Hoben and his wife, Susan, that fully depicts his life and how they coped with what life threw at him and his wife. Their story was that of encouragement to those passing through the same situation out there.

They diagnosed Bruce Hoben with cancer, and he opted for treatment and beat it. Eight years later, Bruce and his wife have been celebrating this victory when He was diagnosed again with oesophageal cancer. This was disturbing, and Bruce made a drastic decision that changed the way he and his wife view life and living in its entirety. How did Bruce cope with this news? How decision did he make? Why not take a journey with Bruce in this book?

Reading this book gave me so many lessons that I will not forget in time. I learnt the valuable lesson that love and family presence in the life of a dying person can make a difference. Bruce made a decision and his wife, Susan, was there to support him all the way. This show of love was indescribable. The author wrote the book in a way that I was able to feel varying emotions throughout the book. I felt Bruce’s pain, and the love shown by his wife and relatives after they found out about his decision. The use of language was quality, and it was full of empathy. The author made sure to carry the readers throughout the process of Bruce’s dying life while sharing the fun, sad, and nasty parts of it. This made the book relatable. Susan also included flashbacks in this book, and this allowed us to know more about Bruce and his lifestyle before he got diagnosed. All these made me enjoy this book.

I am not a fan of memoirs, not to talk of that, include the story of a dying man. This book was unique, and I kept on longing to read the next chapter. There was nothing to fault in this book, as I enjoyed everything in it. The book was also exceptionally edited, as I noticed no errors in it.

A book that is just as perfect as this deserves a perfect rating. Therefore, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I will recommend this book to people who are suffering from a terminal disease and need the strength to pull through. I will also recommend it to relatives of those suffering from terminal diseases. This book will open their eyes to something different and life-changing.
