The book, My Trip to Adele, is a collection of the experiences of three main characters located in different parts of the world, their individual struggles with their ancient culture and the modern world in every day life. What sets these personal stories apart is the music of the female vocal artist Adele and how the songs and specifically the lyrics help them to make sense of their relationships.
At first, the shift between characters made the story lines difficult to follow with multiple lead characters. However, it did not take long to become accustomed to the writing style and chapter structure. Once that was accomplished, reading was fast and furious, in order to find out what happened next to each of the characters. Each chapter was written in a way that ends as a, “To be continued” cliffhanger. The flow of the stories was enhanced by the fact that there were no identifiable typographical or grammatical issues. It was clear that the authors took special care.
Especially appreciated, was the use (and italicization) of terms related to the topics, objects and references to aspects of religion and culture. The reader can then take a moment to identify definitions of the terms and become more knowledgeable, as a result. As the reader moves through the book, it is easy to become attached to the characters and their lives, even if not born into or even familiar with the cultures. All of these aspects make for an immersive and enjoyable read.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was at first difficult for this reader to identify the structure of the book. Others may not encounter this experience. Perhaps identifying the character in focus at the beginning of the first paragraph or in the first sentence of the chapters would provide resolution. Otherwise, the book would deserve 4 out of 4 stars. If a 3.5 rating were possible, it would be given.
Young children would not necessarily find the book of interest; however, the readers that the book would most appeal to are those in the upper teenage and older range, not only for the underlying educational experience, but also for the romantic and other complex interactions of the characters. A word of caution regarding teenagers, due to the somewhat adult nature of some the experiences.
The finale to each of the characters stories was appreciated and maintained the complexity of the characters lives right down to the last word. The authors were not afraid to broach subjects and experiences that might not agree with or that involve the cultural traditions of the characters. Nonetheless, to do otherwise would deny reality. The manner in which growth, rejection and acceptance is treated by the authors is inspiring, in that, it shows that as humans we are really all the same. As such, I highly recommend this book.
