With the loss of the geo-crystal, Rynah's planet Lanyr is suddenly rendered uninhabitable. Can she lead a rag-tag team of Earthlings which includes an inventor, a Viking king, a high school student, and a Greek scribe to save the universe or will Rynah's lost love succeed in collecting all of the crystal's to create the ultimate weapon? With her grandfather's Marlow's intelligent space ship, Solaris, Rynah and her team of heroes may have a chance of victory. Will they be able to collect the crystals in time to save the universe?

Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is a fun science-fiction/fantasy novel that ties in space ships, primitive planets, romantic betrayal, and the human struggles of bravery versus fear in order to weave an interesting tale of survival. Even if you have not fully delved into this genre, Solaris Seethes has enough realistic and human elements that it will draw you in and keep you guessing. As the first book in the Solaris Saga, Solaris Seethes does a great job at grabbing a reader's attention and developing and setting the stage for the next installment in the Saga.

As a reader, I felt it was interesting that I found connections on an emotional level between myself and the main protagonists. Though these characters are are slowly and methodically developed throughout the story, the pace felt natural and flowed well. They take on some very real challenges and face some ultimatums where I was putting myself into their shoes and analyzing what I would do. Though, the main protagonist, Rynah, is sometimes difficult to like or connect to with her frustrating stubbornness, lack of leadership skills, and inability to truly connect with members of her team, she shows a lot of promise and we see glimpses of what she could become in the next Solaris Saga installments.

I also appreciated the ending of Solaris Seethes. McNulty recognized that she did not have to include everything in this story or provide closure to certain events. If she had, it would have made the story tedious and too long. Instead, she set it up for future installments into the Saga, without being too predictable. I felt that this story ended on a note that felt natural with the speed and pace of the story. The second installment of the Solaris Saga should prove to be very entertaining and I am drawn to it because of the ending and lack of closure in the first installment.

Overall, I give Solaris Seethes a 3 out of 4. While the story moved at a great pace and was very interesting, I found that there were certain inconsistencies and missing character points that could be added throughout the story to make the connection between the characters and the readers even stronger. Character development is especially important in a sci-fi/fantasy novel and this story could do with a bit more of it. With that said, the story definitely grabbed my attention and I look forward to following this saga.
