Figments of Persuasion Field Guide by Nancy L Vallette is a graphically illustrated book that dives deep into the world of human emotions. This book creates a fantasy world of figments that embody each emotion or trait of a person.

Emotions are as natural to humans as breathing. Different circumstances create different emotions. We all deal with these emotions differently according to our own coping mechanisms. We often end up suppressing them. In this book, these emotions or feelings appear as figments in the form of any mythological creature. Mythological creatures are a part of every culture, no matter how different they are. This book first explains what a figment is and how it is created. Following the introduction and a few further pages, each page is dedicated to a single figment and its illustrations. Illustrations play a significant role in the book, appearing on at least every other page.

For example, one of the figments is ‘Sentimentals’. When an object becomes vital for a human due to a past event or memory, it has a strong emotion attached to it. Seeing or holding the thing evokes memories of that event. When the feeling is potent, 'sentimental' is born. Sentimentals typically involve positive emotions, but when a dark and negative emotion is associated with an object, it is referred to as 'Shivers'. The name indicates that seeing or touching them causes you to shiver. Like these two, there is a quite thorough list given in the book.

There are several things to like about this book. It teaches us about our emotions pleasantly and memorably through the use of mythological creatures. It can help us grow our emotional intelligence. Learning about these figments can help us recognize both our own and others' emotional characteristics. Since illustrations are major parts of the book, they do not disappoint. The illustrations are beautiful, creative, and imaginative, and they perfectly complement the book. The writing seemed professional and free of error. This book does utilize its own glossary words in a few places, which it clarifies at the end if you have any confusion.

There is nothing to dislike about the book.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars due to its creative way of improving our emotional intelligence. This book is recommended for both children and adults. It is fun, entertaining, and provides educational value.
