Review of Incentives
Incentives: The Holy Water of Free Enterprise by George Franklin is a page-turner. George Franklin possesses the fantastic ability to bring the characters on the pages of the novel to life in the mind of the readers. The 43-chapter novel depicts today’s society, games, lies, spins, and collusion amongst the key players in this scheme.
This book highlights an economic system driven by demand and supply; whereby private businesses compete without government interference. Characters featured include Red Johansson, Armando Salazar, Rosa Castellano, Boone Cartwright, Jaap Van Valkenberg, and his wife, Berdenna. Their roads meet in Western Michigan State, where free market and capitalism are revered in their search for economic incentives and spoils. Do things work out for them in the end? And do unlucky characters such as Bogey Jackson and Skeeter Williams, with many failed business endeavors, later make something out of themselves?
The story is filled with astonishingly hilarious moments. For such moments you should look out for characters such as Bogey Jackson, Skeeter Williams, Jaap Van Valkenberg, and his ambitious wife, Berdenna.
From start to finish, I was pleasantly engrossed in the book that I willingly gave up precious hours of sleep to continue enjoying the hilarious shenanigans and adventures of the characters. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the novel. My favorite parts were the first six chapters, where the characters were introduced, and their roles set up. Also, the last seven chapters, where their plans and deceits resulted in hilarious action was fantastic. Get ready to laugh and not just short spurts of chuckles, but full-on belly laughs that will last minutes at the very least.
There were some dry spots to the novel, and this occurred midway where the characters delved deep into the major theme of the novel – capitalism. Here, readers could easily get lost or lose interest due to the use of specialized terms and quotes from scholars and prominent supporters of capitalism in the past. These are the only areas I disliked in the novel. However, they are few, and in most cases, the characters themselves make jest of these terms and quotes as they have no idea what they are spouting.
Hence, I rate the novel Incentives: The Holy Water of Free Enterprise by George Franklin four out of four stars. The book is very entertaining, professionally edited, well-structured, and put together. I observed a few errors that did not distract my reading experience.
I recommend the book to business-oriented readers and political analysts. My advice to readers will be to settle for an exciting and entertaining ride.
