[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Fax and his Adventures to prevent Climate Change" by L C J Emery.]
Fax and his Adventures to prevent Climate Change by L C J Emery is a science fiction fantasy book. It has 128 pages and sixteen chapters.
Fax, an egg-born Troodon turned into a quantum computer made of diamond, is a member of the Infinite Time Consortium. He was assigned the duty of protecting Earth from alien attacks. He was asleep for around sixty-six million years until recently, when Kyle and Professor Woodrow awoke him from his virtual slumber. Upon waking, Fax gave both of them a big scare, but after realizing they were fellow Earthborn, he apologized. Fax then immediately changed his appearance and asked for their help. What kind of help does the Earth Protector need? This gold-powered hero has a big task that takes readers from Seatown in England to Yellowstone National Park in America and other parts of the world. We follow Fax on his adventures in discovering threats to Earth and how he eliminates the dangers, all in Fax style.
L C J Emery has done a fantastic job creating a character with an animated feel and bizarre and unexpected thinking that only a virtual being could have thought of. I liked the concept of the quantum-real character, and the plot was grand. I recalled all the funny scenes of Jim Carrey in The Mask movie whenever I read about Fax’s actions, like the cartoon-like jaw drop, changing appearances, and the robbery incident at the Tower of London.
I loved the part when Fax transformed into a whale smoking a cigar and holding a gun; that was a funny and vivid image. And after reading, I also got the big picture of all kinds of human activities that can lead the Earth to turn into a barren planet. That realization from this book was a reminder that we need to change our ways. I enjoyed the first and last three chapters. The three concluding chapters contained the most profound parts, and the ending was beautiful and concerning.
The story is creative, and Fax is a splendid hero. But this book falls short in two areas: the language used and the fast-paced story. Some sentences went right over my head and were not easily understood. I had a hard time reading through many of the conversations and scenes, and it took me three readings to comprehend their meaning. I could have enjoyed it more if the language was simple and understandable.
I also felt the pace was too rushed. A lot was happening together, and there was not enough space to understand some scenes. Because of that, there were parts that I had to reread to know what happened. When Fax, Kyle, and Professor were going to Africa, Fax was inside a memory midway through the ride, where he went to a restaurant, and only after rereading did I get that he was still in the memory. These two negatives detracted from my reading experience. I will deduct two stars for these two reasons. I also noticed ten errors, and for this reason, I will subtract another star.
I give it two out of five stars. Two stars for the captivating plot and Earth’s protector, Fax. I recommend reading this book if you want a humorous and lighthearted story about saving the Earth from pollution and other harmful activities.
