"The Devil Pulls the Strings" by J.W. Zarek blends historical fiction and urban fantasy. Set in modern-day Wentzville, it blends Slavic mythology and time travel. The protagonist of the novel, Missouri artist Boone Daniels, has faced numerous challenges throughout his life. The main issue in his life is that he has panic attacks. He lost his parents to an evil ghost when he was six years old. After filling in for his best friend at a gig in NYC's Brownstone, a body plummets from the balcony as gunfire erupts throughout the space. Boone just about makes it out alive, but not before discovering a dark scheme to play a rare Paganini composition that calls on the Devil to capture Baba Yaga and demolish contemporary New York City. How does a small-town musician fight with the demon creatures and save New York City? Read the story to find out.

With New York City as its backdrop, the novel features supernatural elements mixed with murder mysteries and drama. There are excellent plots, and the writing intrudes from the very start. Alternating between modern New York City and 19th-century Italy, the story seamlessly blends fiction and mythology. This action-packed narrative will give you the best adrenaline rush, for sure. From nail-biting chases to fights with vampires and devils, this book has everything an action enthusiast needs. My favorite character in the book is undoubtedly the main lead, Boone Daniels. His character development is brilliant. I loved him from the very start. My favorite quote in the book would be “I’m everywhere and nowhere at the same time.”.

Overall, there is nothing I disliked about this book. Hence, I would give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Thanks for the excellent editing; I couldn't find a single mistake.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves urban fantasy.
