The dark themes in the book are eye-openers to the cruel realities of poverty. Congratulations on Book of the Day!

The themes of this book are quite dark. Therefore, this might not be the right book for me. I, however, like your comprehensive review, as it paints a clear picture of what to expect from Making Monsters. Your review has also helped me understand the rationale behind the title, as I was a bit confused by it. Thank you!

I'm impressed by the relevance of this book in painting a picture of the society as it existed and still does in some countries. Thank you for you thorough analysis of the book.

Thanks for a well-written review! The goriness is something I won't be able to get past in this title, but I admire the author's ability to present the monsters, abuse, death, and other sensitive subjects in an engaging way. Using a nine-year-old was a good move as well. :)

I want to read this book already… Vander lived a life of struggle and his story is quite emotional. I’ll love to know the kind of superpower he possesses and how that will work for him as he journeys through life. Thank you for the amazing review

This book brings so many dark themes, from racism to gender discrimination. Besides, Vander Masozi seems to be an interesting character with a very dysfunctional family. Congrats on BOTD to the author! Thanks for the review!

Am sure it must be hard for Vander Masozi to live the life he's living with an abusive father, I would love to see what happens to Vander Masozi, so I will add the book to my bookshelves.

A very sad and thrilling book with the central character, a young boy named Vander Masozi. Vander has special abilities but he lives with an alcoholic and abusive father and his mentally defeated mother. His home, a shanty in the slums of Cape Town. I went on vacation to South Africa and spent a week in Cape Town, a beautiful city close to the southern tip of Africa. Unfortunately, there are plenty of shanties that are made from castoff pieces of wood and metal. The living conditions in these shanties are very sad and should be changed. South Africa is a beautiful country but the politics and racism are horrible.

Each chapter gives an insider's view of the other characters including the violence and death. Vander's mom Amahle continues to stay in an abusive marriage and of course one has to ask why she stays. The book ventures into gender discrimination, racism, murders, sexual perversions and poverty and is difficult for a young boy to endure. Government corruption went on for the entire time the past president was in power and it is going to take a long time to root out this corruption including the police force. A very thorough review and definitely a book to read.

I like the fact that Vander is from a low life family and he still tries every day to provide for his family so his dad can stop beating his mom

With the loads of tragedy I'm dealing with right now, I don't think Vander's background story would help a bit. However, I love the storyline and would wish to look into it some other time!

A true mirror of slum life, a slum boy with supernatural powers makes it more interesting. Vander's mom life in marriage is horrible. Thank you for the review.
