Gunbarrel Highway is the story of Daniel Morrison, a lawyer struggling with an addiction problem and going through a divorce, who flees the scene of an accident that kills the other driver. He runs to his sister’s house and discovers he’s wanted for murder while waiting for her to return home. When the police come for him, he escapes and forces a passing stranger, Tricia Kelley, to help him. The two find themselves with bull’s-eyes on their backs when the victim’s husband, a prominent local politician, offers a large reward for his capture, dead or alive.

Daniel escapes the police by the narrowest of margins. The story follows his attempt to avoid all those hoping to collect the reward while facing a deceitful relative, crooked cops, money-hungry Texans, a gung-ho reporter, and a relentless detective.

Daniel finds himself in more trouble after each encounter and questions the wisdom of his plan to turn himself in. As more people attempt to kill him, Tricia changes from a reluctant hostage to a helpful partner, believing his side of the story and working with him on his plan. Will he escape cowboy justice or fall victim to one of the vigilantes? The fast-paced action never lets up as the two are in constant danger.

There are twists and turns throughout, with a surprising development that pushes the stakes even higher in this deadly game of cat and mouse. The author weaves an entertaining, action-packed tale filled with blood and dead bodies. Daniel’s actions feel believable, and his decisions match his character well. The subplots involving his wife, the reporter, and others add depth and balance to the story.

The numerous editing errors, including missing hyphens and grammar errors, prevent the story from receiving a perfect score. Although they don’t distract the reader too much, there are too many to ignore. I rate this 4 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to those who enjoy a good thriller.
