The Child by Marcel Marquié focuses on Detective Toni Bonnet and his efforts to locate the son of his latest client, Sandrine. His detective work takes him throughout France, bringing the reader on a journey along with him, and his investigation is inextricably linked to both the French and Spanish resistance. Detective Toni is determined to succeed, and if his motives for helping go deeper than just a sense of occupational duty, who can blame him?

I’m a great fan of mystery novels, so I really enjoyed this book. The steps the detective takes and the obstacles he faces are realistic. There was no deus ex machina to save the day, which usually takes me out of the story and disappoints me, and the progression of the story was natural. While the humour wasn’t overwhelming or notable, it did help keep an otherwise dark story light. The characters also had realistic reactions, and their motivations were fleshed out. Regarding the writing, I have no complaints. Marquié does a good job of building suspense and establishing a sense of foreshadowing in his writing.

Additionally, the book was sprinkled with tidbits about French history, WWII, and the Spanish Civil War. I do enjoy a book that teaches me new things in an enjoyable manner without fatiguing me with information. I can confidently say I found nothing to improve within this book. Perhaps the most ringing endorsement I can give of it is that immediately after finishing The Child, I went to purchase the first book in the series. That’s another thing I should mention. I like that the book seamlessly recaps past events, allowing one to enjoy the story without necessarily having read the prequel. Of course, I do recommend reading it. Marquié’s storytelling agrees with me.

Overall, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend it to those who like mysteries and thriller books.

I can't agree more on the fact that this book is quite unique as it teaches information on WWII and some other histories. But I always wonder whether these historical facts shared are true compared to facts presented in well-researched history books.
