Confused by Tale of Two Cities Ending

I was cruising along fine and just about to the end. However, when the heroine suddenly ends up joining the lawyer, Carton, at the guillotines, I was confused. He was taking her husband's place, was he not, for her sake?

Shouldn't he, when he saw her, be like "Erm, I'm sort of doing this so you and your husband can be together. You're killing the point, no pun intended, dear, by being here. Scat!"?

An explanation would be fine, because Dickens isn't answering his ouji board

The girl beside Carton at the guillotine was a seamstress girl, not Lucie Manette. Dickens did this to show that they convicted and killed even the most innocent people. Mrs. Manette and Darnay fled the country, using Carton's namesake as a safeguard.

And also he didn't just take the place just so that Lucie could be with her husband, it was because he loved her and wanted her to be happy even if it wasn't with him.
