No matter how many times the remake this movie, it will never replace the magic of actually reading this great novel for the first time. I have never hated a character more than I have hated Daisy.

Isn't it great when Hollywood discovers a classic like the Great Gatsby! Loved the book, haven't seen the movie yet.

True. There was a famous version made in the 70's with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, though. It was not bad at all, though I can't compare it to the new version as I haven't watched it yet (I will -- love this book). There were also other versions made. I remember seeing one on TV a few years back.

I think the film made the book into a spectacle rather than an accurate portrayal of the book. The director whom I knew directed Romeo and Juliet a few years back is known for making things a bit more modern and over the top.

I read this book a long time ago, but recently, before the release of the film, I downloaded and listened to an audiobook version of it to reacquaint myself. I was surprised to find that I got very irritated with the narrator; he just allowed himself to be buoyed along and entangled in the messes created by others. His inertia really frustrated me; why didn't he object at any stage, or set them right?

I completely agree. I didn't think it was a bad movie, but it couldn't measure up to such a great book!

I read the book in High School, as well as watched the Robert Redford version of the movie. I didn't like either and that has kept me from watching the new movie. It looks visually pleasing but sometimes that just isn't enough for me, so I have resisted. I am curious. I didn't like the book I think because I am more of a straight shooter type of person and so I felt like all of the symbolism in the book was a waste. I get it, but I don't like it. It just felt like the author put in a LOT of effort to put in as much symbolism as he could. It just seemed over done to me. I know I am going against the grain on this with most people but that was how I felt. Anyone agree with me? Probably not. :) Maybe I should re-read it now that I am older, but I am not sure my opinion will change that much.

I first read "The Great Gatsby" in high school (as did half of America lol), then read it again in a course dedicated completely to F. Scott Fitzgerald in college. I definitely want to read it again sometime soon! Haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm looking forward to watching it!

It's many years since I first read Gatsby and I still love the book - I love the evocation of the period, the decadence, selfishness and egotism but also the sadness and desolation. I have yet to see the recent movie version but I have watched the 1974 version numerous times & for me Robert Redford will always be the definitive Gatsby.

I read this book for a book club - couldn't really get what the hype was all about, but it seemed fine.

What wouldn't Gatsby do for his Daisy?! What lie wouldn't he tell to have her love again? I really did enjoy this novel. Fitzgerald told the story beautifully and I cant believe he didn't receive more credit for his work when he was alive! This book touched on so many aspects that are still relevant in today's society especially the infatuation most have with celebrities, fame and materialism. But this novel was about more. It was about the love and dedication of one man, and the greed and selfishness of another. I definitely recommend this book to people because of how intense this story is.

The novel really touched me. I was shocked by how far some people will go to put up a front. It really shows the true colors of some woman. Not seeking a marriage of love but of standing. I believe that the female character would have left her husband for Gatsby if she genuinely felt that they could live content, getting and doing whatever she wanted. Not even attending the funeral of a man that she supposedly had feelings for. It really displayed woman in that time darkly. :x    :(

I enjoyed the movie more than the book. This is probably due to the fact that the book is very vibrant and visual and so seeing all those parties and things on screen really made the book come to life.
