Official Review: Efenians -- The Book of Life by JC Paulino
Efenians -- The Book of Life by JC Paulino is the book you never thought you wanted but never knew you needed. The self-help genre of books is oversaturated and repetitive, yet this book managed to stand out. From the very beginning, the author launches into a thought-provoking recount of human history and the evolution of humanoid physiology, both of which have eventually led us to the creatures we are today. This theme continues throughout the book; the author consistently strives to provide scientific ground for the validity of seven “Noble Truths” that bring us happiness if implemented. Immediately, in the introduction, I noticed how well-researched this book was and I was continuously impressed by mentions of scientific theorems and research experiments.
Each part of the book is broken down into chapters explaining one of the author’s seven “Noble Truths.” Many of these chapters are introduced with the history behind a credible individual who has been closely associated with the author’s suggestion. For instance, in order to introduce the fourth “Noble Truth” that concerns the importance of nutrition, the author recounts the history of Hippocrates and his famous appreciation for proper nutrition. By detailing Hippocrates’ skills, his well-deserved reputation, and his support towards the author’s emphasis on the healing power of nutrition, the reader perceives the author’s argument to be credible.
This really became my favorite element of Efenians -- The Book of Life. The author included historical context to the lives of Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel, Isaac Newton, Mahatma Gandhi, Michael Jordan, Hippocrates, and more. In doing this, my attention was effectively captivated at the beginning of each chapter, which made time fly while reading this book. Even more, it was genuinely interesting to learn about the lives of these historical figures, and having finished this book, I appreciate this unique touch.
With that said, I disliked one element of this book. The author consistently specified actions that needed to be taken in order to heed a “Noble Truth,” but at times, the author did not explain how I could implement these actions. For example, when speaking about the sixth “Noble Truth,” the author writes we should always have a positive attitude. This explanation left me wondering how one simply adopts a positive attitude. It would have been helpful to further read about tangible action plans or thought processes that could be used to achieve a positive attitude, in spite of incredibly difficult circumstances.
Overall, though, Efenians -- The Book of Life offered lots of interesting ideas and advice. I think that the mark of a good book is its ability to make you consider the author’s message. Not only has this book persuaded me to consider it’s advice, but it’s left me with things to think about long after having put it down.
For this reason, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Efenians -- The Book of Life is an easy-going, inspirational book. However, I feel obligated to take one star away for the grammatical errors that I found. I would highly recommend this book to readers interested in picking up a self-help book because the thorough use of science to support ideas is unique and intellectually stimulating. On the other hand, I would not recommend this book to readers who only enjoy fiction books, as it is informational and will likely bore them.
