Official Review: Leadership Tune -Up
As times change, leaders face more significant challenges and difficulties. Leadership Tune-Up by Christine Johnson McPhail provides solutions to some of these problems.
The book is a twelve-step guide to becoming a better leader, regardless of your position in any organization. The author states that her objective for writing the book is "to provide a tool for professional growth by explaining how to develop and implement excellent leadership behaviours." She identifies twelve steps that will aid any professional to build their leadership skills and use them to ensure that their organization meets set goals.
She shares insights from her experience as a higher education consultant and years of research. She also uses real-life examples to show some of those principles in action. The author goes further to show what happens when leaders fail to follow these principles. This book is a complete package.
One thing that endears me to this book is that it is not a one-time read. It's more like a toolbox one can always use to solve a particular problem or respond to a specific situation. One can build upon the principles the author shares in the book, personalize them to find a rhythm that works for them, and use them to deliver outstanding results in whatever position they occupy in an organization. Since the author is a higher education consultant, most of the examples relate to schools and colleges. However, the principles will work in any sector.
I love this book because there are practice sessions at the end of each chapter. Though the vignettes allow us to visualize each principle in action, the practice sessions get the reader to think and figure out how to apply them in real life. This was my favorite aspect of the book.
Her writing style is engaging and easy to read — and also understand. The points are not ambiguous, and they adopt a practical approach that makes them fun to read. The book inspires people to pay more attention to self-development and build their skills as leaders.
The author also provides materials for further reading from her other leadership articles. There's also an index at the end to make it easy for readers to find specific things within the book. I give a million thumbs up to the author for being so meticulous.
I could not find anything to dislike about the book. It seemed to be professionally edited, as I saw no errors. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars and recommend it to anybody interested in developing their leadership skills.
