I think he mixed jealousy with anger and fear. James feared losing the woman he loved since it was a taboo love, from different wealth classes and the master-slave dynamics. I think he was also still angry from their childhood experience and all that resulted in the overprotective and borderline offensive treatment of Lilly and the black family.

I feel he was too jealous, and over protective. It would definitely bring problems as lily wouldn't put up with that attitude.

I agree with you. I think the author wrote that to convey how much he cared for Lily (or maybe an act of redemption for what he put her through) but I still felt as if it was a little over the top.

I agree, I also think it’s important to remember Jesse Adams’s role in James’s character. That doesn’t change that James acts inconsistently with Lily, angry and cold one moment, slow and passionate the next, but it’s not completely his fault that he can’t always act the way he wants to towards Lily because of the influences he’s dealt with.

I will agree that James was too overprotective of Lily, maybe because he was scared of losing her again but I don't think he was too jealous as jealousy and over protectiveness are two different things

To be honest, I do feel James concern, but I always feel he is a tad bit too possessive. Yes I get the fact that he loves her, but it sometimes makes me uncomfortable.

I totally agree that James was very jealous and possessive of Lily. It is only understandable that he does not want to lose her but it was on the extreme in my opinion.

In many instances, he was very possessive and jealous of Lily. It was as if he had no trust for her to make decisions for herself. I also think it did not help that he would not stand up to his father when it came to his feelings for Lily. Not only did I think James was jealous, but I also found him weak.

Yes, I think James was too jealous. And I found his possessiveness towards Lily quite annoying.

There's no better way to describe his recent attitude other than wrap it up in the word "Jelousy". I pity James though but I guess he made a perfect villain.

I see James as jealous with the ways he exhibited it. Well, it happens that when we feel insecure in relationships, it 100% of the time leads to jealousy.

Maybe the fact that he and Lilly were on different social levels was an insecurity to him. He might have felt undeserving of her love owing to the fact that he was her master. Racial difference and beliefs of the patriarchy definitely had an impact on his irrational reactions of jealousy. I therefore think his jealousy wasn't too much far-fetched and exaggerated.

I agree. James was too jealous. Sometimes he had that feeling. But he still controlled himself.

I understand the author was trying to portray how strong his feeling were for Lily, but it came off very possessive and overly angry to me. I feel like with her growing independence, this could potentially be a problem in the future.
I do agree with you on this one. He did come out to be possessive or overprotective. I do understand his concerns for Lily but a relationship like this will suffocate the other leading to a bad ending. I don't know how it will be further going in the story but his behavior with Lily was not really appealing.

I think he was too possessive. He could have shown his strong feelings for Lily and not be jealous or obsessive about it.
To him, he feels he's communicating his feeling clearest way.
