The book claims that life exists for a specific purpose: love. What are your thoughts on this argument?

The book claims that life exists for a specific purpose: love. The chapter “God is All-Loving” references numerous studies on the sources of human happiness to support the claim that love is the purpose of life (summary available here: https://ygodallowsevil.com/love-2). What are your thoughts on this argument?

Insofar as the word 'should' even has meaning, then we must say that the past is exactly as it should be, everything that happened should have happened, and everything that should happen will happen

This philosophical work emphasizes the importance of love in life. I believe that the reason we are connected to one another is love. We want to fit in with our culture and community at large because we happen to love and be loved. All religions too places a strong emphasis on it as an important part of the divine. God and mankind have a relationship based on love as well. Love, in my opinion, is one of the things that allows us to overcome the pains of life and find serenity. Ultimately, I have to admit that love is a big part of how we are shaped and shielded from our inner demons.

I think the idea that love is the purpose of life makes a lot of sense when you look at the data about happiness and human connection. Those studies referenced in the summary about how relationships are the strongest predictors of happiness resonate with me.

Deep, meaningful connections tend to matter more in the end than pursuing achievement, status, or financial possessions, even if it's easy to get caught up in those pursuits. However, it's the connection between love and the potential for evil that really got me thinking.

It's such a paradox that we need to be free to choose in order for love to exist, which implies that making a bad decision is always a possibility. It gives the impression that love is a very frail yet priceless object.
We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.

Generalizing it like this is what I disagree with. People are created for different purposes and love may not be the reason for some.

I'm not sure love is the only purpose for life, but more so growth is. You can live without love, but you can't live without growing. Anything's purpose can be boiled down to "getting to the next day" for whatever reason it is, but that is the final motivator is to continue on. I think there are other purposes than love that would motivate someone as well, such as happiness. One could argue that self-love is a form of love, and thus having the purpose to fulfill one's life with happiness is ultimately having the purpose of love. Overall, I think something like the purpose of life can't be boiled down into an emotion and be true for everything.

I believe each has their own purpose of existence and a unique role in life. However, I think we can only live in peace and harmony, fulfilling our purpose in life, with the presence of love in everything we do.

I tend to both agree and disagree. In the religious context, at least for the majority, love is the greatest gift we can give and receive. Why is that? Its because love is a selfless act but does it mean that it is our purpose for existence? No, because we all have different pathways. To love and to be loved is a bonus for those who find it. I want to think our purpose is to fully function as one body, mind and soul from that a purpose may be born.

This is a controversial topic as people, religious or not, tend to gravitate towards different reasons that make them want to live and make a purpose out of it. Some people say for them it is love for their people but for some, it may not be a person but their passion for doing what they love. In that sense, this book speaks more to the loving and religious people.

I will say the specific purpose why life exists is not Love, as it is far more than and totally not in that direction. However, the claim can be rewritten to say love is the reason why life can be meaningful and continue, but not the purpose for life's existence.

Yes every life occurs for a purpose but placing a specific reason on it may seem untrue. Some people are born villains.

I think that argument holds water. Because without love, without seeing each other, there won't be collaboration between people, so no civilisation as we know it. At least that is how I think about love in that context. So we live to collaborate, and love remedies that interaction.

The argument that love is the purpose of life is compelling because it highlights the deep connection between love and human happiness. Philosophically, it aligns with the notion that meaningful relationships contribute more to long-term well-being than material success. Studies in psychology and sociology support the idea that love, whether through friendships, family, or romance, leads to a fulfilling life. While the claim can be seen as subjective or faith-based, its grounding in empirical research on happiness adds weight to the argument.

Indeed, life exists for the pupose of love . The purpose of love gives life its meaning, and we are a product of love.

I haven't read this book yet but the arguments above are interesting and encourages me to look into this book. Surely love is important for living.
