I love reading his books. I've read most of the Alex Cross series. He does do a good job at making a book that you don't want to put down.

Marketing genius? Yes.

Do I appreciate him as an author? No.

I'm sure his books appeal to many people, we're all different right? I do not personally enjoy them, they like the character and plot development that I crave.

Nothing against those who do enjoy him though. I encourage everyone to read, no matter the author.

I love to read James Patterson, especially his different series. I have read some of his stand alone books but I am into the series the most and I haven't been disappointed.

James Patterson is a contemporary American writer. His best selling novels include thrillers, children's literature, and other fiction. He is known for having co-authors on many books. He is not known for the depth of his writing, but for his ability to keep the action going. Crime dramas seem to be his favorite genre. His characters Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, and the Women's Murder Club are well known. Also known are Daniel X, Maximum Ride, and Witch and Wizard

He has branched into literacy and children with Read Kiddo Read,a wonderful learning program, giving back his talent to children everywhere.

I have a love-hate thing going on with Patterson.

I think his books usually have some good ideas or interesting plot lines. But his chapter breaks drive me INSANE. :D

My son and I are huge fans of James Patterson. I think he is not only a skilled author of adult fiction but his talent has clearly spread over to young adult and child literature as well. My son asked me to read the Maximum Ride and Witch and Wizard series, and I really enjoyed them as well as his writing style. My younger son is reading the Middle School series also by Patterson that is geared toward tweens. I am very curious about the Alex Cross series.

I didn't know all that about Patterson getting criticised by Stephen King. I hate it when authors do that to each other!

But personally, I LOVE James Patterson, he is one of my favourite authors and I started his Womens Murder Club series years ago and still love it to this day. Yes, the majority of his books have similar storylines, that's because he writes books of the same genre. There's only so much crime/thriller you can write about until it becomes stupid.

I agree with above too, all his books are quick reads (to me anyway) and they definitely keep you on the edge of your seat anticipating what happens next! But it's not a crime for everyone not to like the same thing?

I personally have never read a full Stephen King book either - I've started a few, got about 1/4 of the way through and couldn't continue. His writing style just doesn't sit well with me and I find it tedious and hard-going - but that's just personal opinion.

Maud Fitch wrote:James Patterson is a prolific, diverse writer but I think that's why I don't always enjoy his books. I mean he's got series like Alex Cross, When The Wind Blows, Women's Murder Club, Maximum Ride, Daniel X, Witch And Wizard; on and on goes the list (including novels written with countless other authors) until he becomes a book machine. According to my local librarian, he has eight - yes, eight! - novels due out this year. And at least six due next year.
It seems to me that he works on the premise that quantity is better than quality.
Yes! I love a lot of his works, but lately he has just been turning out books left and right. To me that just screams "I don't care how great these books are, just that I throw a lot of them out there." I don't tend to like his co-authored works of late, and I feel that his later series books have faltered from their usual standard of quality. I actually stopped reading the Alex Cross series and Women's Murder Club books, which at one point I loved. He's a good author, but he has definitely lost some of his magic.

The one James Patterson book I read was amazing...until the end! I don't even remember the name of the book, I just remember there being a lawyer and I remember not being able to put the book down so when I got to the final pages of the book and it all went down hill I was so angry that I never picked up a book by him again. I have been thinking about picking one up again though.

Personally, I have only read two books by James Patterson (both from the children's section), but I enjoyed them quite a bit. The story, though definitely challenging at times, was very easy to get into, and the characters and style very entertaining.
