For fiction, all I need to start is inspiration, something to write with (a PC), and references at hand to look up facts (Google.)

For factual works, read up on the subject beforehand.

Find the source of inspiration and spend some time just thinking, it's better to spend not hours but days, without talking to anyone, it really helps to free your mind and force your inspiration work

To start writing you need inspiration and at the same time you should be in the mood to write. You can also scribble all your thoughts that is related to the topic you are about to write,.then start from there...

I do eat when I'm writing it makes me feel upbeat.. :D that works for me!

If appropriate, it's also a good idea to research what you're writing about, so you know something about it. The internet makes it easy.

For example, I just wrote a story about archeologists finding something in an Egyptian tomb. Knowing nothing about it, I was able to sound coherent on the subject with a few hours of research. You're still allowed to make things up, but it's good to know when you are.

Yes. It makes me nervous if I don't have a clue about a setting.

I keep a small pocket notebook with me at all times. That way when I'm reading or just when something pops into my head that inspires me, I can grab my notebook and write it down. Then when I am sitting down to write, I have all the ideas there in one place. Also, I try to write down as much as I can in the moment when I get that flicker of inspiration. I write down where I am and what I'm doing and what made me think of it, that way I can really remember what exactly was inspiring to me in that exact moment.

Its good to have some sort of diary/notebook on you; but I find the deeper things you think about resonate better when you can recall them without an aid.

I wouldn't dare do that! I always have a bit of paper on me, for whenever ideas come.

A cup of tea in my Writer's Cup (English Bone China)...and a couple of pecan tea cookies...2 hours of quiet...using the first thirty minutes to free-associate/play with words...sometimes photographs or in case of non-fiction material...reference books on-hand. And absolutely no interruptions. Needless to say...I do a lot of my writing at night.

Its just that you need to have a great idea to start working and your imagination will soar as you keep on writing and your ideas will open up automatically.
