I agree with most of this with the exception of the highlighted portion. Even if you publish with a reputable company, it (the company) would expect you -- the author -- to be at the forfront of promoting your own work. However, most authors automatically assume that a publisher will get its distributor to distribute their book widely.

It will suffice to mention just one point in the excellent article, "The 10 Awful Truths About Book Publishing". It notes in point 4: "A book has less than a 1% chance of being stocked in an average bookstore."

Enough said!
