The time depends on the topic.

I spend no time in planing. If I do I lose the story I have to get it out as soon as posable otherwise. The meat and the neatness of the idea are lost to me. Anyway its usaly a dream that I'm writing. Anyway u all know how fast dreams disapear out of your head. I don't worrie about spelling or anything. Just getting the idea out heck iven even called in to work to finish a story

Usually it will require about 3 days to outline what I intend to write but later part as it goes along, there will be a lot of changes taking place as well.

Though I realize I'm wrong in some way, I never plan long. The thing is I must catch any ideas and thoughts that come to my mind, and this must be done immediately 8)

With writing, I think it's different for every person. I don't plan at all, really... half the the time I'll just have an idea at total random, and figure out how to incorporate it. Then, I'll be proofreading or see something doesn't fit, or needs to be expanded, whatever, and just re-write it. (I'll admit - this can be a pain, and I have to be careful it doesn't look sloppy.)

With time, everyone finds whatever style fits to give the best writing, so by all means, try anything people advise, from banging out randomness on a keyboard to a veritable map of the book on scratch paper. It's a lot of trial and error, and always will be, so never give up!
