NaNoWriMo?

Post by MLHenry »

I'm interested to know: is there anyone here who participates in NaNoWriMo and is planning to do so again this year?

For those who might not have even heard of this weird thing, NaNoWriMo (pronounced: Nan-Oh-Rye-Mow) stands for National Novel Writing Month, and is a ludicrous attempt at writing 50,000 words in thirty days during the month of November.

I haven't actually thought about trying for it this year, but it would probably be a great idea. I've tried NaNoWriMo twice before. Once I was able to finish the challenge, but I wrote 3/4's of crap, mostly. I have the salvageable parts of it to be laid out in the future for a story. The second year I tried, I got caught up quickly in being behind word count, and unfortunately I lost heart and refocused on other important things, like school at the time. It's great in that it sets a goal and forces you, on your honor mostly, to keep to it. The tracking information is kind of funny to watch be tallied as far as word count goes, but it can also be very overwhelming; it is a rather daunting challenge. Overall, it's not a bad idea to get you motivated to actually producing work, which is the real point of NaNoWriMo, keep those of us that edit as we write from sabotaging ourselves, or at least attempt to foil it. I'd say give a try!! I think I just might try again myself.

Like litmonster, I've done it before, but it seems when you tear through like that, some of it just turns out bad. I know the whole point is to sit down and write, but I think sometimes we fluff it up when we know we have a deadline and nobody's actually looking at the content. Only makes it harder to edit, sadly. My "manuscripts" (because they're just mess) from 2013 and 2014 actually ended up being edited into one project, so I guess they came of some use. But it's definitely not write a book in a month, because the editing is hell.
I have done the 3-Day Novel Challenge, though (it was just this past weekend). I didn't finish it, bu I got about 11k in three days, so that's not bad. Makes me feel pretty confident about NaNo this year,

I've tried it before, but have never finished. I'd really like to finish one year. Not sure if it will be this year, unfortunately. Does anyone have stats on the success rate of the project? Like, do more than 50% of people actually write the minimum amount?

Every year I believe they tally the stats for how many people completed the challenge by state or country, though I don't remember how many typically do. I do know that a few authors that have been published in the last couple of years started their stories for NaNoWriMo. "Night Circus" is one example, I believe, that springs to mind. It's never a bad idea to try and just get your thoughts down on paper, and that's what NaNo does.

I'm giving it a shot again. The last time I did it, I was in college and had all the time in the world. I'm still trying to figure out how to fit writing into my schedule.

Too busy. Now in process of reviewing my 3 novels prior to publication and working on the 4th novel in the series. Maybe another time.

But good luck to all who will be enjoying this.

I am going to try participating in NanoWriMo this year. Things have finally settled down from college and graduating and getting married, and since I'm only working part time I really have no excuse. Will be my first year participating. Excited! :D

I participated in the NaNo Camp few months ago and really enjoyed it. Being in a cabin with fellow members who were really supportive helped me a lot. I didn't write as much as I hoped but still much more than I usually do. I am so lloking forward to November's official edition! I even arrange my practice shedule, so I won't have any exams in November, lol!
I plan to work on the novel I started in the camp. I know it is not strictly per the rules, as I won't be starting a new project. But I am really into the story now. My great goal is to have it finished by the end of the Nano, or at least have the word count doubled.

I have never done the camp or the thing they do in April (maybe writing screenplays or something?) but I have done Nano every year since 2010, so I will probably do it again this year. However, I have NO IDEA what I will write about this time. Hahaha. Maybe something different. A romance. LOL. That would be funny. I am like, the least romantic person in the world!

I won't be doing NANOWRIMO this year, but I did join in a few years ago and it was great! Once you commit to the task you feel obligated to finishing or coming as close to finishing as possible. I never thought I would win, but it kick-started me in the right direction. If you are thinking about doing it, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so. :D

I've known about it for a while...but perhaps this year will be my first year in participating. Good luck to those who participate as well!

A question -- what is the end use of the novels that are written? Are they published or made accessible as e-books, or what? Do they get reviewed and are their prizes (even if the prize is an imaginary gold medal)?

Thanks.
