I've never understood how a person can write for money, I mean all depends on inspiration, not on the sum of papers they will give you for your work.May be I'm wrong...

Thank you socialsue for all of the suggestions. I got so much information from you all. I have a notebook full of poetry and I love to write. I don't know what to do with it. I didn't want to go through trying to publish it becasue I don't have the money for that. I didn't think about the internet. Are there websites where I can post my poetry for contests and things like that?

As for contests and things of that nature, I'm certain there are a lot everywhere, you'd have but to google it. BUT you'll want to be careful and look at privacy policies, copyrights and things of that nature. The last thing you want is for your work to be stolen!

I imagine the best way to make money though is to approach a publisher and at least see where that goes. Even though the royalties authors earn is usually very, very low, its still income, and the most time-tested and stable way of earning if you can get published. I don't think any method, publishing or internet, will make you wealthy though, most authors can't do that. We all know J.K. Rowling's richer than the queen of England, but J.R.R. Tolkien sure never made much in his day. But you never know either, and I note that all wealthy authors are the published ones.

Here are what I believe to be the most realistic and effective way to make money writing:

1) freelance for a small local newspaper.

2) get a job as a copywriter (writing ads) at a marketing company

3) write for a web company (i.e. mahalo pays people to write search engine results)

4) write articles for elance

5) write ebooks targeted at niche markets and use google adwords to advertise it.

Hope this helps!
