What does it mean to be a writer?

Do you think you have to be published? Do you think you have to write everyday? What's the essence of being a writer? Just curious to get your opinions. Thanks!

I think being a writer means you have a passion for words...you use them intelligently either to write an educated essay, article, a blog even or to create a novel...you even have to have a passion for writing if you are writing children books. I think that as long as you have a passion for reading and writing you can be a good writer and obviously to be a good writer you have to keep on reading!

Being a writer is an inborn feature. You should be crazy about writing, about putting the words together and forming some kinds of sense.
Besides you should have profound knowledge in many spheres as your books are supposed to be about everything.
And a writer should be patient as the success doesnt come at once.

I agree with Moore, there's something to be said to be naturally attracted to writing. Most of us find throughout our lives there's certain things we particularly enjoy and want to pursue, so if you're trying to force yourself to become a writer it may not work.

Of course, what's the purpose of writing if isn't published. Everyday? Depends to my mood. Being a writer is not just you write, you must have a passion on it. You can't write a good story if you're not into it.

Do you think you have to be published? No, of course not. I think being a writer means you can't not write. You feel the need to write something down whether it's a story, a poem, or your own thoughts or reflections. I think you can be a writer even if no one but yourself reads your work. Do you have to write everyday? No, I think as long as you keep writing and don't just write once and stop or give up, you are a writer.

I guess it's different for all, for some it's like a hobby, for others it's life time devotion

I think an important aspect of writing is that you have something you want to convey to the rest of humanity. Sometimes it's just a story, other times it's a specific idea we portray through the story. Either way, we impart a lot of ourselves when we write. I think humanity is somehow a little better defined by the whole of our fantasies and fictions.

For most authors, underlying their need to write is the need to get people to read what they've written, otherwise it becomes a pointless exercise. Even if an author has sold just a few hundred copies of a book, he has achieved his goal considering that his work is competing for attention with a massive number of other works.

The essence of writing is to have your thoughts out in everybody's mind and to capture the head and heart of your readers..

Simple. A writer is someone who writes. You don't need to be published or write everyday. If you're happy in what you're doing, that's the end of it.
