Original ideas

Post by freekristy »

Do you sometimes feel that all topics/scenarios/storylines have been exhausted? Ideas come to me and when I think about it for a little while I realise that it starts to sound similar to a book I have read, or a show i have watched. Its so incredibly frustrating! Are there any truly original ideas left?!?

It's a well-known fact that all ideas have already been used and you can only modify them. So I agree that the new ideas about modification usually come all of sudden.

Yes i agree, you can defiantly see it in the film industry today. Re-makes of old movies, or comics and video games. But the thing that is special, despite how much your idea is similar to someone Else's work, that work is yours. I am sure there are differences as well, but its yours. Nothing will ever be replica's. If so everyone would be the same and whatnot.

There are of course new ideas yet to be mined. So, that is not the issue. The real issue is twofold. First, there is a paucity of original thinking. Secondly, most writers prefer to stick to safe, conventional themes and merely write variations on those same well-worn themes. All this adds up to a situation where more than 90% of writers never get to first base with anything they publish.

Even the best writers (ex. Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis) stole ideas from authors such as Homer and also from Greek and Roman mythology.

Trust your skills.

"Boy meets Girl" had been done thousands of times before Romeo & Juliet. Then Shakespeare's skill made the story all fresh again.

Agree! And you put it so eloquently - I just have to 'quote' you. Which of course is a bit funny when you think that the thread is on the idea of whether there are any new ideas out there!

No! There are always something new to write about you just should think about things that are around you. Use your imagination and you will find something to write about.

There will still be some very unique ideas out there, but yes it is true, as human civilization carries on, we gradually decrease our stockpile of new ideas, but there will be some pretty crazy ideas still not created yet.

You have a good point, so many movies these days are remakes of older, inferior films or else "reimaginings" of classic movies, people are lazy and dont want to sit down and come up with a fresh and original idea, or failing that, at least a different spin on an already established idea. Horror books are ripe for original ideas but tend to fall into the "slasher/psychological/monster" category and as for books, Larssons' trilogy is arguably just a reworking of older thrillers like Grisham. But i remain hopeful that there are still a few ideas out there yet to be exploited but once a book is entertaining i dont mind at all.

You know, i think we conceive ideas that we only think are ours. When we read a book something remains hidden in our brain and after a while we think it's our idea because we take it from deep inside. It's hard to be original when you are surrounded by other one's ideas. I think for this you have to be in a solitary place, to be only with yourself, to be able to be detached, to think free.

Maybe, maybe not. Someone who is immersed completely in a social setting and is worldly-wise can also think up original ideas. There is no dearth of original ideas to be mined. The real question is whether a person has the courage to swim against the heavy tide of conventional wisdom... To be a contrarian. To be the solitary voice in having the chutzpah to put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) and say that everyone else has got it wrong based on the evidence marshalled and the analysis put together forensically... :D
