When do you find it easiest to write

Post by BooksByEssie »

I recently (in the last few months) started writing. I find that it is hard to find a solid block of time to write. I have two kids and sometimes only get a few minutes to myself a day.

What I want to know is, do you find that you are able to write anything of quality if you only have 20 or 30 minutes to sit and write?

Actually, the less time I have the better results I produce; maybe because I usually thrive under pressure.

Its funny that you say this. Last night I could have had an uninterrupted 4 hours to write, because the kids went to bed at a decent time, but I had to make 7 dozen cookies and some rice crispy treats for a volunteering thing today.

So, I only got to write in short 6 or 7 minute bursts while the cookies were in the oven, and what I wrote wasn't too bad. :)

My suggestion is to carry a notebook with you at all times. You can be waiting for the doctor, traffic lights, oven timer or kids to clean their teeth and have a brilliant idea. Jot it down to use later. A journalist trick is a small hand-held voice recorder. If you want to be hands-free in the car, use it instead. Mobile (cell) phones have taken the stigma out of talking to yourself! This way you are prepared with notes to make the most of your precious writing time. Let the kids know that you need a small amount of time set aside to write and incorporate it into the daily routine. It is amazing how they will work around that as they get older and respect your creativity.

Keep writing no matter what!

Often times, I'll visualize a scene or a setting in my head that is so clear, so gripping that I absolutely have to write it down. Unfortunately, there are also times when I don't exactly have a notepad with me so I end up scrounging around my bag looking for a napkin, an old receipt, even an envelope that I can use to jot down these ideas before I lose them. It takes me a total of five minutes to do this and some of my best ideas occurred because of this.

I find that when I sit down with the intent to just write, I tend to struggle a bit at first. Once the words start flowing, though, it's a torrential downpour and I can sit there for hours on end just writing. This is very rare, though.

I agree. Carry a notebook all the time so you can jot-down immediately when the idea sparks.

I find myself more attentive in a secluded room and in night. I'm a nocturnal person/writer/reader

This is going to sound absolutely crazy, but I will say it anyway. I write whenever I can, but the crazy part is that when I'm stumped--when I can't figure out what scene should come next in a story--I go lay down and kind of put myself in a dream state with my characters, like a deep daydream. I can't believe I'm admitting this, because none of you will ever think much of me from now on. So once I get into this dream state with my characters, usually something unexpected pops into my head, as though the characters themselves are communicating with me from the realm of my own fiction and letting me know what they want to come next.

Okay, so now you know how strange I am.

There is a modern suggestion to carry a laptop with you all the time and where ever you go is rather boring and hard. It would be fine to have a notebook and a pencil. But to my opinion it's better to remember all the situations and thoughts in your brain, just train your memory having exiting and bright impressions.

I love writing at this time of morning: 2:07 am. I have a book blog, and just wrote like 1,000 posts! Just kidding, only four.

Try to write at night when it is peaceful and you can concentrate. My friend who has a kid does it.
