Well you're on a book & reading forum so I don't expect you will find anyone here to say writing & books are anything but important (vital in fact IMO)

Of course. I cannot find a reason not to be.
A single feature that it carries message is already important.

In the development of human societies and culture writing was a crucial step. It meant that ideas could be promulgated from one person to another without those people ever having to physically meet. It also meant that ideas could be transferred across generations without the need to learn everything by rote.

Today it has brought about the situation that there are more ideas than any single human being can encompass.

Some educators are calling it 'information obesity'. To stay in shape and successfully select, filter, process and understand huge amounts of daily information, our reading and writing skills are more important than ever before.

Absolutely yes, Writing is a form of communication. Simplest example for this quote is Love Letter. It is a beautiful method to tell anyone about your feelings.

I still think that communication is more important as we speak more than we write and it is more important to have good communication skills than writing ones.

There's no doubt about it. Just like what we are doing. We are writing in this forum and we are communicating.
