Wow, this review made my jaw drop. So many things happen to people (good and bad), that's why it's so important we support those who have the courage to document their experiences. Great review by the way and congrats to the author on #BOTD.
P.S Major kudos to Elizabeth R. Burchard and Judith L. Carlone for documenting this emotional journey.

Seems like an interesting read but I would probably get upset re all the abuse the writer experienced and how, sadly, she was manipulated and violated by a predator, who was of a cult. Sharing her experience in this way, I'm sure, was very therapeutic for her. Hope she is healed from this experience. Thanks for sharing!

A thought-provoking and fascinating book. Burchard and Carlone help us to understand how an intelligent, well read, and insightful individual can be manipulated into accepting the bizarre doctrine of a sociopath. Thanks for the review.
Feeling upset sometimes may be unavoidable, but acting distressed is always optional.

I'm wondering if I can handle this book with its themes of manipulation and abuse. It seems really good though and I was drawn in to the story. I may consider it.

This is a great review of the book from what I have read so far. I simply started with the sample and have become invested in finding out the rest of Elizabeth's story. While it is hard to see as an outside how one gets pulled into a cult it seems to be easier when you see it through the eye on a person that has lived that life. Cannot wait to finish reading this book.

I wonder if the perpetrator was brought to justice. I certainly feel for the terrible situations Elizabeth found herself in throughout her life, and undoubtedly she will spend the rest of her life trying to rebuild the ability to trust someone else. Hopefully by revealing her story she can get some healing and make others aware of what to look out for. Great review.

Thank you for the engaging review. Elizabeth sounds like she went through a lot from a young age and onward. I can identify with some aspects of her story and that helps to pique my interest in reading more. I'm curious to read about what all she went through as she dealt with this man and what compelled her to essentially drag in other innocents as well.

I enjoy the occasional memoir, so I’ll consider checking this book out. I’m not sure how I feel about abusive situations though.

From a sampling, this book was an interesting accounting of the "cult." The book deals not only the idea of a cult, but also about friendship and about the strength and support needed to break free of those oppressive abuse. Well Done.

This book is quite interesting to read. It is fascinating to understand a story about cults. Congrats to the BOTD. Thank you for this nice review.

At first I thought this was a fictional work. However, I see that it is a true account of a cult victim? This is not a book I'm interested in but can understand it may be helpful to others. Thanks for the review and to the author for the book.

This is one of those stories that, on the surface, may not seem important, but when one really looks at it it is essential. Recognizing when someone is being manipulated, such as Elizabeth was, is crucial to getting out of a bad situation like being in a cult.

Thank you for the review. It is always striking the influence that certain types of people can exercise in others weaker or manipulable, to the point that they can end up prisoners of this kind of cults. While this is not my type of reading, I am sure that many will find this book interesting.

Thank you for your review it was very detailed and sparked my interest in the story. It does sound like a very compelling story and it is quite brave that Elizabeth is telling her story of childhood abuse and what leads her to join a cult.
