I love the author's gift for storytelling, his sense of humor and the beautiful descriptions in the book. What starts like a backpacking adventure through Olympic National Park turns into a journey of discovery in "a land of magic, history and legend." Thanks for a wonderful review!

Thanks Espie for this wonderful review. I am on the verge of starting to read this book myself. Based on your review, I am in for an absolute treat. I loved the way you described the attributes of each character and showed them in contrasting shades.

Espie, I enjoyed the review that you did. I found it a bit technical and had to grab a dictionary to understand some of the words you used, "pedagogy" is going to be my new word when speaking about the education of my kids. I liked the fact that you did some homework on the author and included this into your review. Congrats on your book of the day review.

This sounds like a great as so many people seem to agree on that fact. I wonder how Tom would handle the situation with Sarah, his granddaughter, since he just discovered about her existence. Congratulations to the author for winning BOTD.

I liked it when you said that the author integrated his own personal experiences and also some pieces of himself into the characters. It is one way to have the characters relatable and more genuine. Thanks for this review Ma'am! Glad you enjoyed it despite the few errors encountered.

Strong Heart has great themes about extended family and values along with a nice look at Pacific Rim Native culture. Best of all a fine and fun story. I would actually give it about 3.5 stars rather than 4, only because the story within the story; while central to the direction of the book, was a bit long and fanciful and I wanted back to the tale of Tom, William, Myra and Sarah (and Sergei). My thanks to Charlie Sheldon!

Thanks for your insightful review on Strong Heart! This book seems to focus on heritage and mysticism to a certain degree - pretty intriguing. However, after reading the sample, I don’t feel an urge to continue with this book for now.

Great review, very detailed. Sounds like an interesting story. I could only imagine the skirmishes between Sarah and Tom, being maybe even humorous at times. I even wonder how Sarah became orphaned if she indeed has living family..it is very possible. I could read this one.

Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a mystery drama on identity and a journey of discoveries about oneself and one's place in the world. I have Adrift by Sheldon and he writes drama well. This strange drama starts with a 13-year-old girl at the doorstep of Tom Olsen. Ruth, Olsen's ex-wife tells him Sarah is his granddaughter. She is surly and doesn't want to be with Tom at the end of the world. But she ends up accompanying his group on a trek through the mountains. Shouldn't Olsen be calling child services? Try this book! After having read the review by Espie, I now sense that this book taps into narratives seen through the lens of science and embodied through the characters Myra and Sergie and mysticism. Espie writes: "It will appeal to those who are open to be enticed by a unique blend of pragmatic consciousness and imaginative mysticism." Thanks Espie, you have conveyed how uniquely written this tale is and have convinced me to give this book more than a peek. Congratulations to Charlie Sheldon for this interesting work!

I read the sample and I think it is very cleverly written. The characters are developed to perfection and in such a manner that gives the reader a pragmatic perspective. Nice review.
