The thought of what a mother feels when her son is condemned to prison for life is overwhelming. This book is a great memoir that encaptures this deep feeling and many others a mother and her son might share.

I am not surprised at your feeling that David should have not been sent to prison. If it was not for the Innocence Project, then many men would have been put to death or died in prison for crimes that they did not commit. I am glad that this book was written because it shows how we can improve our justice system to truly reflect the vision that our founding fathers had.

Merely looking at the cover page, I didn't especially such setting in the prison. Going further to see how a boy could survive such trauma at a young age really surprised me. It is a touching story indeed And I wish the young generation would learn from this book.

Yours sincerely.
Books are lovely.

What an inspiring story! This just proves that one mistake does not define a person. A mistake can change him and make him a better example for future generations. Kudos to the author and thank you for your review!

A story about someone who was let down by the system and the people around him actually sounds pretty interesting. Great review.

The story of a man who was let down by everyone and ended in prison will definitely stick in the minds of the readers. I will add it to my to-read list. Thanks

Not interested in non-fiction or memoirs and the story seems too sad for me so I added to my not interested in reading shelf. However this seems like a really inspiring story and a lot of hardships were overcome.

Thank you for the great review of what seems to be an interesting book. Although prison life is not the happiest of subjects, it is a reality of our world and it is difficult not just for the people inside the prison but also for the loved ones outside it.

Wow! This is a good read, and a nice review. I will put it in my will read later. The book is for matured minds. I like books that impact on character positively.

What a difficult topic to deal with - the harsh realities of our broken and flawed criminal justice system (at the best of times - outright bigoted and archaic at the worst). So I already have a great deal of empathy for the man and his mother in telling this story. I'm very interested in reading this book, despite the parts that confused you. Given your review and your rating, I am sure that those parts and some slow characterizations, will be easily overlooked in the big picture. I look forward to finding out what happened, and using it to start some discussions about our justice system. Thanks!

I am not certain about reading the book, but I can say Davin is the character who the whole plot revolves around. As a teenager accused of murder, I think there are a lot of mechanisms to be put in place to curb any potential psychological disorders. Well, I hope his mother would assist him overcome the trauma as he is tried and convicted in prison.

If the sample did not necessarily convinced me to read the whole book, your interesting comments made me want to read more. I had the impression the book is born out of Davin's mother's guilt for what happened to her son who was convicted of murder at the early age of 16. You wrote that the book is much more than this, it's about Davin's strength and power of endurance. Thanks for a wonderful review!

Thank you so much for this beautiful review. I believe it does justice to this profound story. I only read the sample, but I seriously couldn’t put it down. The gorgeous descriptions peppered with philosophical ideas just rolled right off the page. I will definitely be reading this book!

I have long thought that our criminal justice and prison systems need reform, and I'm glad to find a novel addressing these issues from a place of personal experience. The issue is quite deep and complex and most people do not see beyond the surface of "He was a bad person and a criminal and deserves punishment". I will definitely be reading Reaching the Shore and expecting it to impact me much as it did you. Thanks for the review.
