Have you ever wondered why children are so attracted to superheroes? Is it because of their colorful costumes? Or perhaps it is the way a superhero overpowers the “bad guys” —this is hard to tell. Toni the Superhero is a picture book that teaches children that being a superhero is not always on catching the “bad guys” nor merely the wearing of a colorful outfit. The book describes the character of a superhero in a new way. The author, R.D Base, is a mother of three young boys and lives in Northern Maryland.

The superhero, Toni, is a little boy who loves doing chores at home when he is not saving the world. Toni can play, sweep, dance and even rescue animals. The book points out the little chores that children can also do at home, for them to be a superhero like Toni. It teaches children the virtue of hard-work. It also changes the muscular-superhero stereotype often seen in movies and cinema. Furthermore, it teaches children the lesson of helping those around them, especially at home.

The book, illustrated by Debbie Hefke, is presented with a mixture of bright colors, thereby giving it an attractive layout. It also shows the kind of items that can be found in different rooms in the home—this helps a child to identify and name objects around him or her. For example, the book displays things found in each room. A child can easily tell the difference between the things found in the siting room from another room such as the kitchen. Any child can happily learn from Toni as he is seen reading, drawing and singing in the house. Moreover, the activity on each page is expressed in simple and easy-to-understand sentences.

However, in some pages, the author gave some specific information which only adults (such as parents) can understand. For instance, the water level that is safe for children; the need to have a playground at home and some varieties of fruits that should be part of a child’s diet.

Gladly, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars: it is free of grammatical errors, well-illustrated, well-written, and child-friendly. Babies and toddlers will be attracted to its bright and colorful outlook; children in preschool and kindergarten can use it as a spelling aid. Also, the book is suitable for hyperactive children, especially boys, who prefer playing to reading. Parents should not be surprised when their children begin to sing, sweep, and draw after reading Toni the Superhero.

Truly, at times all it takes to make a desired change is to have good intentions and not superpowers as some people think.
