The book, Superhighway, by Alex Fayman, is a delightful exploration into the technological unknown, and a modernized take on the famous literary character Robin Hood. Teenager Alex Fine has grown up in and out of foster homes, his only stability being his Orphanage administrator, Mrs. Perkins. Naturally intelligent with a hard work ethic, Alex discovers a science fiction style superpower that changes his life forever, and through his actions, affects the world as we know it.
I loved this book, as it was fairly well written. Written from the perspective of the main character, it could be a bit clunky to read at times, but accurately depicted the thoughts of a teenage male living in California. The author chose to use foreshadowing of the story in the first chapter, but used too many details that were to be learned later in the book, so it was confusing and slow to get into the rhythm of the story. This issue was easily fixed by reading the first chapter after finishing the book, but I would have preferred having the story told from the beginning, rather than backtracking through the entire novel. That being said, the novel was captivating, fast moving, and very graphically pleasing. It is not recommended for younger readers, as there are numerous sex scenes and drug use in the book.
Without giving too much away, the author does a wonderful job with his descriptive vocabulary of the story. I had no problem imagining the ocean in which Alex Fine swam in, the food in which he devoured in the way only a teenage male can, and I could almost feel the electric charge pulse through my arms as Alex was using his superpower to achieve his dreams.
I also really enjoyed how endearing the author made the characters for me. I found myself rooting for the main character, his girlfriend, Mrs. Perkins, and praying the antagonists of the book would simply go away. This book is the first of a trilogy, so the ending of Superhighway was very open-ended. It is definitely captivating and well written enough to plunge right away into the remainder of the books without a second thought.
I give Superhighway by Alex Fayman 4 out of 4 stars. One reason is that is very well edited, with no grammatical or spelling errors that I could find. Another reason is that is a fun and easy read, with 255 pages, that one could polish this off in a few uninterrupted hours. I always wished I could keep reading the book when I had to be done, which is a compliment to the book itself. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a suspenseful thriller who wants to connect to a strong main character.
