You can often read a portion of a new book online but not the whole book unless you pay for it.
Old books are free online because their copyright has expired.
You can borrow any book from a public library for free.

Not free of course but available on line.
Occaisionally I have seen a hard copy book and then found it is not in the istore - but this has only happened couple of times.
