Will Cleary and his twin sister Emmy disappeared at age two on Christmas Day. One week later, accompanied by a falcon and a wolf, Will was returned home with a glowing waterweed. Of course, he had no memory of where he had been or what had happened to him during that time. When the story begins, Will is twelve and his sister has still not returned or been heard from since her disappearance. The wolf and the falcon remain at home with Will and his family.
Standing before the frozen pond in his backyard, Will wonders if he dives into the pond, with his glowing plant, will the invisible door there open once again. Soon Will is transported to Echoland, an enchanting and mysterious place inhabited by beings known as Echoes. An Echo is explained as a mirror image of the Sound, which is the actual person. For example, when you look into a mirror, your reflection would be your Echo and you would be the Sound. This stunning and captivating fantasy world is filled with these translucent and ethereal beings. Fate Sealers and Fortune Tellers work together tirelessly to carry out the Law of Death, which mandates killing an Echo whenever his corresponding Sound dies.
I give The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid 4 out of 4 stars. I liked this book because it reminded me of the enthralling adventures in the Harry Potter series. And I was especially captivated by the author's vivid imagination and extraordinary detail in describing the fantasy world of Echoland. The book was well edited. Also, I loved the amazing illustrations appearing throughout the book. They help the reader to capture the author's imagination and to bring this enchanting and beautifully frozen world to life.
I could find no issue with the book or find anything I disliked about it. The initial part of the book is a bit fast paced and may require rereading portions of the first few chapters to keep some of the characters and concepts clear. Still, I could not turn the pages fast enough to see how the story would end.
This novel will definitely appeal to people of all ages who love reading books involving magic, fantasy and a young teen who is fearless enough to venture into a new world with hopes of making a difference there. Someone not at all interested in fantasy novels might wish to pass on this book. Also, there were a few gruesome scenes that might offend a few readers. If you enjoy getting lost in an intriguing and magical adventure in a stunning and frozen land, then this is certainly the book for you.
