I am glad you enjoyed this novel. This novel seems to dish out important life lessons while charting the journey of the protagonist. Thanks for the review!

The book is exceptional! Even though it has been said that the rise of Hiram is in part one and his fall in part two; I personally believe that the rise of the protagonist was in part two. The best thing that ever happened to Hiram's life was the jail-break, which brought him away from corruption and deceit. The flow in his life after the jail-break was when he really started to live.

The book was very insightful! I personally found my self admiring different characters who taught him different things about life, changing his views and perspectives. Some advices were very powerful that moved me, e.g. “... you need to think about who you are, what you want in life and what you want now. How your desires and dreams might have caused wrong decisions on your way to the top... don't let your emotions cloud the truth”.
I agree with you that part two was the rise of a protagonist, McDowell. That quote sounds like it came from Maud. The women in the second half of the book helped McDowell rethink things.

Very profound -that McDowell really started living after the jailbreak and so part 2 of the book is his rise. Great perspective. I failed to see it that way. Great review!

You wrote this so well, giving readers a good feel of the book but giving nothing away that would ruin it if they choose to read it! I also wrote a review on this book (and another book by this author).

I have to admit in the first half of the book I had nothing but bad feelings for the main character, and these feelings took a lot of changes in the second half before I started feeling different. I probably should have had a more forgiving attitude when he was changing his actions at least-like when you said: "which resulted in me sympathizing him, since in reality he was truly lost."

Interesting to know your views on this BOTM. I liked that you differed in your views with other reviewers regarding the supposed 'rise' and 'fall' of the protagonist. Your portrayal of Hiram in the review sounds very insightful. Thanks for the review!
