Nice review! I like reading stories about doctors. They were always portrayed as the profession that doesn't get much time for themselves (sleep or leisure time) to save other people's lives. So I think this would be interesting to read about a selfish doctor.

It's sad that Mc Dowell was so accomplished but his family wasn't even proud of him.

I totally empathize. I hated Hiram with every fiber of my being, which is probably high praise to the author for being able to convey such strong emotions. But I agree, it's great that the author shows a path to redemption and the book is masterfully developed.
